Why is a thinner eyebrow better than a thicker one?

A survey was conducted among 163 women and 38 men (Hwang and Kim, 2018). They were asked to view illustrations of the 4 brow thickness levels and to choose which they thought were ideal, young-looking, healthy-looking, and sexy-looking. Brow thickness was defined in reference to the width of the palpebral fissure (eye width), as follows:

1.Thick(Tk - 1 / 3): the thickness of the eyebrow is 1 / 3(33 %) of the eye width at the lateral canthus.
2.Medium(Med - 1 / 4): the thickness of the eyebrow is 1 / 4(25 %) of the eye width at the lateral canthus.
3.Thin(Tn - 1 / 5): the thickness of the eyebrow is 1 / 5(20 %) of the eye width at the lateral canthus.
4.Very thin(VTn - 1 / 6): the thickness of the eyebrow is 1 / 6(16 %) of the eye width at the lateral canthus.

Results demonstrated that medium brow thickness(med-1 / 4(61.2 %, 123)) was significantly preferred over thick brow. Though thick brow was most often(40.8 %, 82) considered young-looking, there was no significant difference between thick and medium(35.3 %, 71) brow thickness. Thick brow(48.8 %, 98) was most often considered to be healthy - looking, followed by medium brow thickness(30.8 %, 62).On the other hand, thin brow was most commonly considered to be sexy - looking(40.8 %, 82), followed by very thin brows(25.9 %, 52).

Why is a larger Bi-gonial width attractive among males?

A study conducted at the Department of Sociobiology and Anthropology, within the University of Goettingen and University of Vienna (Windhager et al, 2011) found that “Both physically strong men and those that women perceive as masculine and dominant had a broad middle and lower face, a short nose, and thin lips”. However, “when perceived attractiveness is high, the lower jaw is narrower and not square”. Adding further to it, “females rated males with an increased facial height and a prominent lower jaw as more dominant, but not as more attractive”.

The positive effects of narrowing the male jaw’s width was also demonstrated in a study by Kleisner et al (2013). They found that “Men with wider faces are perceived as less attractive and less trustworthy”. Interestingly, males tend to rate their self-perceived attractiveness higher when they have a “relatively square mandible” or jawline (Kanavakis et al, 2021). This is likely due to the competing (and often opposing) values of males and females during sexual selection and mate choice. As a square jaw and “robust face shape” are the result of “a high testosterone-to-oestrogen ratio in pubertal males”, and “facilitate the lateral growth of cheek bones, mandible and chin” (Fink et al, 2005) it is likely men highly prize their masculine facial traits. Whereas, the ratings of male attractiveness and female preferences, prioritise a softer, less masculine male face (which can indicate a better father or “higher paternal investment”) (Dixson et al, 2016).

Why is a smaller nose width better than a wider one?

Three studies highlight the perceived attractiveness and masculinity linked to a smaller nose width in men. Ferruccio Tersello’s research at George Eastman Dental Hospital, conducted on 50 Italian models, determined that a nose width smaller than 1/4 of the facial width contributes to facial beauty. Similarly, Doug Jones from the University of Michigan found that a youthful and attractive face often features a high ratio of lower-facial features, unusually large eyes, full lips, and notably, a small nose. Lastly, Cunningham et al. (1990) connected perceived masculinity to certain facial features, including a smaller nose width. Their study suggests men with narrower noses are seen as more masculine and attractive. Collectively, these studies highlight the preference for a smaller nose width, linking it to attractiveness, youthfulness, and masculinity in men.

Why is a larger Bi-temporal width in comparison with Bi-Zygomatic width attractive?

A larger bi-temporal width in comparison to bi-zygomatic width is considered attractive among males. A study reported that an attractive male face was found to have a longer, more dolichocephalic shape compared to strong, dominant, and masculine-rated men. Unattractive faces often featured a rounded lower face, a vertically stretched chin region, and horizontal compression in the eye and eyebrow areas. In cross-cultural studies, women found mesomorphic masculine body shapes with greater muscle mass more attractive than endomorphic body shapes with high body fat proportions. Attractive faces typically had a narrower lower jaw, a wider, fuller lower lip, and a longer facial shape. Additionally, according to a study, faces with shorter width were perceived as more trustworthy. Therefore, a larger bi-temporal width relative to bi-zygomatic width contributes to attractiveness and trustworthiness among males.
